Deb, FTW

Recent email conversation between Deb and myself on the topic of marshmallows. What follows is edited and used without permission. Sorry, Deb.
Deb:  I found kosher marshmallows at my grocery store, so I’m super excited to have roasted marshmallows for the first time in about 20 years – I’ll probably take a bite and then realize how disgusting they are, but I’m still excited to try it!

Ellie: What makes them kosher? I've tried half-heartedly to find vegan marshmallows, but I've been told they're not common out here.

Deb: What makes them kosher?  That they’re not made with piggy feet. So, yes, they’re vegetarian (or vegan, I guess ).

Ellie:   I always thought gelatin was made from horse hooves, not pig feet.

Deb:  Maybe it’s whatever feet they can get their hands on.
Then she looked it up and sent this:
according to Wikipedia, it’s actually not feet at all.

Maybe the missing 1% is feet. Enjoy s’mores season, my friends! Try not to think about what you’re eating

I had three of them (one just roasted and two s'mores) and they were even more delicious than I remembered (and far, far more delicious than I expected)! :-)

And, I have the rest of the bag for future camping trips this summer.

I'm glad they were good! Last night, I looked for them whole-heartedly at the veggie-friendly organic store, but didn't see them. Does anyone know a good mail-order foodstuff company?

I am 1000% certain that you can find veg*n marshmallows (look at my useful hippie-snob knowledge!). According to their website, the vegan confectionary brand Sweet & Sara is stocked at a store in Huntsville, ON which I believe is within driving distance of your cabin ... Does Halifax not have a Whole Foods yet? I know you have a Planet Organic. You can also buy online from S&S (they ship internationally, but I don't know how customs would work for edible things).

Huntsville is driving distance from my cabin. In fact, we will drive into it frequently for Kawartha Dairy ice cream when we are there this summer.

Thanks for the links, I'll check it out.
